We reuse our water three times before it flows into a traditional septic system:

1st use – Showering or using the sink
2nd use – Watering indoor plants
3rd use – Flushing toilets

While this building design could allow for a fourth use—landscaping outdoors before the water reaches the drainfield—we chose not to pursue this option due to the freezing temperatures we experience during winter. Additionally, the cost of installing a rubber-lined cell for outdoor use exceeded our budget.

Our home captures graywater, the byproduct of showering and handwashing, through standard plumbing. This graywater is channeled into a rock-filled botanical cell where plant roots naturally extend into the rocks, minimizing the need for top watering.

As the water flows through the botanical cell, the plants filter it, creating a symbiotic relationship where humans and plants work together to manage resources sustainably.
